Runes were an alphabet widely used by the Vikings. It is the oldest known writing system in Norway and was used in Scandinavia from around 100 AD until the late Middle Ages (around 1350–1537). The meaning of the word is uncertain, but it is thought to mean ‘secret knowledge, mystery’ or ‘counselling (conversation)’.
